'The Latina Thing' Alexandria Claps Back At FOX NEWS

Fox News Gone Done It Again With ‘The Latina Thing’ Dig At AOC

Just about every week, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a news story! Rep. Ocasio-Cortez is the ‘lightening rod’ of America as stated on the recent Time magazine cover reveal (out on stands April 1st). On the cover of Time, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez’s visible strength and determination in her expression is framed by her signature bold brows and unapologetic red lips.

There is no question, that we are living through the most politically visible era for women of color and this is just the beginning. However, with all this visibility, comes a yield and fight for power for women political candidates and career politicians alike who are challenging the establishment.

A recent Fox News segment, The Ingraham Angle hosted by Laura Ingraham, an American conservative talk radio show, is under scrutiny for mocking Rep. Ocasio-Cortez for how she says her name. Both host Ingraham and her guest, Joe diGenova, a political media pundit and former prosecutor, both had openly participated in the mocking. diGenova said, “She does the Latina thing where she does her, you know, ’Anastasio Ocasio-Cortez,‘” he then mocked Rep. Ocasio-Cortez with a heavy stereotypical Latino accent while Ingraham nodded and agreed.

Of course for FOX News this is not the first ‘off the cuff’ statement on their set – – this was a dig and attack at Rep. Ocasio-Cortez’s position of power and critique as a proud Latina/women of color. In a New Yorker interview, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez stated, “I am as power as a man and it drives them crazy.” Seeing a woman, a ‘brown woman’ in her power is no question a threat to America’s sensibilities of who should be in charge.

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez in her quick like ‘lightening rod’ fashion took to Twitter. Her Twitter feed documents all digs and her defenses to her gender, capabilities, intelligence, social class and more –  past and present, and another to add to her thread, ‘The Latina Thing’. As usual, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez made valid points in defense:

Not too long ago, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez clapped back at Aaron Sorkin for saying she needs to “Stop acting like young people”. Being the youngest woman lawmaker, at 29, secures her for perhaps a life long career in politics in comparison to her much older, mostly ‘white male’ counterparts. Why would this not be seen as a good thing? Rep. Ocasio-Cortez’s age and ear to the ground on social issues is and should be seen as an advantage.

In February, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez along with other supporting politicians presented the ‘Green New Deal’ a plan to fight economic and racial injustice while also attacking climate change. Her plan is a work in progress and commitment to the very issues she stands by, but being met with many ‘Green New Deal’ haters who believe her plan is too broad, too expensive and may bring on more social issues in the long run than anticipated.
